The strip of Northeastern Moldova known as Transnistria should be avoided by foreigners – the breakaway republic is not under government control and as such embassy and consular support in the region do not exist. Whilst the area is not dangerous per se, violent outbreaks have been known to occur. All non-essential travel to the region is therefore advised against. Vaccination typhoid is sometimes recommended. Most foods are generally considered safe to eat, though bottled water is recommended over the chlorinated tap water.
